Weekly Update 2/21/12

Hello, Secular Students!

Here is your update for 7th week!

Meeting Reminder
Our next meeting will be today, February 21, at 6:00 pm in the Uncommon Room of Rockefeller chapel. We'll be investigating our ethical intuitions, whether they're consistent, and whether or not we can trust them. Yes, there might be some trolley problems.

Announcements
  • Greta Christina's Talk: Greta Christina will be speaking at 6:30 on March 1st about Atheism and Sexuality. She's a feminist queer atheist blogger at Freethought Blogs (http://freethoughtblogs.com/greta), so invite your friends and come on out. Here's a short bio:
Greta Christina has been writing professionally since 1989, on topics including atheism, sexuality and sex-positivity, LGBT issues, politics, culture, and whatever crosses her mind. She is on the speakers's bureaus of the Secular Student Alliance and the Center for Inquiry. She is editor of the "Best Erotic Comics" anthology series, and of "Paying For It: A Guide by Sex Workers for Their Clients.
  • Ask an Evangelical, Ask an Atheist: On March 5, members of SA and IVCF are going to be asking each other questions in a sort of roundtable format. We've decided that debates are less productive since we come from such different assumptions, so this is intended to allow us to challenge each other from each other's own axioms. Submit questions here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGRQTHFLbzNSLTJWdDlBZl9Va0JtMnc6MQ
  • Blogging and Vlogging: If you interested in sharing an article or a video blog on our website, email us at ssa.uchicago@gmail.com. Or, if you're just interested, but aren't sure what to write or talk about, email us about that too, and we'll help you get started.
Additionally, if you run a personal blog about topics related to secularism, let us know, and we may feature it on the website as well.

  • Want to write for Teen Skepchick? Maybe you can! Also, the Secular Student Alliance has a few summer jobs open.
  • Finally, Purity Bear is watching you. Yes, really.
That’s all for this installment. This week's quote in from an article in the Independent:
"Whenever I hear the phrase 'militant secularism', I know that someone, somewhere, isn't getting their own way."
